Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan - Earthquake

The worst earthquake in Pakistan's recorded history occurred on 8 October and affected neighboring India and Afghanistan. The earthquake measured 7.6 on the Richter Scale and was followed by more than ten after shocks ranging from 5.2 to 6.3. At least 40,000 people are estimated to have died and it is projected that the death count may reach up to a staggering 80,000.

Rotarians and Rotaractors throughout Rotary International District 3270 in Pakistan have mobilized relief efforts throughout the country to assist the affected communities in northern Pakistan. Medical surgical teams have been organized and are performing surgeries in mobile relief camps. Volunteers are collecting blood, donated goods, and funds to provide immediate and long term assistance. An estimated US$500,000 has been raised and Rotarians are requesting additional funds. The following donated goods have been requested: tents, sleeping bags, blankets, medicine, canned food, rice, bottled water, candles, matches, and water purification tablets. The Rotary Club of Karachi Midcity (District 3270) in Pakistan and Afghanistan and the Rotaract Club of Szabist Karchi Midcity, has provided volunteers to most of the relief camps set up by Rotaract clubs throughout Karachi. The club is collecting funds to provide the immediate need of 500,000 tents, dry milk and medicine. The Rotary Club of Islamabad Margalla has established a relief fund in order to assist the victims of the earthquake with immediate and long-term assistance. The club is working with local Rotaractors in order to provide tents, blankets, warm clothing, food, and medicine. Funds will also be used for the construction of new homes. The Rotary Club of Rawalpindi Rohtas (District 3270) in Pakistan is collecting funds and donated goods for earthquake victims in the most affected region of Bagh-Azad Kashmir. The following items are being collected in Islamabad for distribution to relief camps: first aid medical supplies (bandages, ointment, analgesics and medicine), dry food items, warm clothing, blankets and tents, drinking water, candles and matches. The Rotary Club of Lahore Main (District 3270) in Pakistan is collecting funds in order to provide the immediate need of medicine, food, water, clothing, and other items to the earthquake victims. The club president and assistant district governor will be leading a team to the most affected areas to assess the needs of the local people. The Rotary Club of Islamabad West is collecting donated goods and funds to assist the suffering communities in Kashmir, NWFP, and Islamabad. The club has appointed a committee to collect and purchase these items per the priorities set by the government. The following items will be purchased by the club and will be accepted as donated goods: blankets, bedding, tents, sleeping bags, medical supplies, generators, flour, sugar, rice, tea, dred fruit, bottled drinking water, dry milk, infant feeding bottles, and cookware. The Rotaract Club of Karachi (District 3270) in Pakistan is working with the Rotary Club of Karachi to collect funds in order to provide the immediate need of medicine, food and water to victims. Funds will also be used to provide long-term relief in order to help victims rebuild their homes. The Rotary club of Kashmir (District 3070) in India visited the worst hit areas in the district and has arranged for an emergency team of doctors to assist the affected communities.
