Rotary: Doing Good in the World
The 2017 Float promotes and celebrates
the 100 years of The Rotary Foundation. The Foundation empowers
Rotarians to travel throughout the world and create and complete
projects which serve people in need in six areas of focus which
are: promoting peace, fighting disease, providing clean water, saving
mothers and children, supporting education, and growing local economies.
The spectacular and colorful dragon is clearly a world traveler
carrying luggage decorated with the six symbols of the areas of
focus. The Dragon also is proudly wearing a necklace with
a medallion marked 100 for the 100 years of services. - Rotary Float
Committee.

- John F Germ,
President, Rotary International commented:
Long before Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram,
Rotarians around the world recognized the importance of finding
new and creative ways to spread the word about Rotary. The Rotary
Rose Parade Float Committee float is perhaps the longest-standing,
and best-known, of these projects. Every year for the last 37 years,
Rotarians across the United States and Canada have carried on the
tradition of designing and building a float to enter in the Rose
Parade. This year, the float will be seen by an international television
and social media audience of over 83 million people in more than
200 countries!
I looked forward to riding on the float in
this year’s parade, and congratulating the Rotary Rose Parade
Float Committee for their creativity, commitment, and hard work.
The float is a wonderful way to raise Rotary’s profile, and
to show how Rotarians can Be A Gift to the World, by Working Together
for Peace.

The Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee was
thrilled to learn that the Tournament of Roses theme for the 2017
parade was “Echoes of Success,” honoring those who contribute
to the success of others.
The theme of our 2017 Float is the Centennial
Celebration Theme "Doing Good in the World." Rotary Communications
and the committee selected this theme to emphasize and iterate the
Centennial Celebration with the Celebration of the New Year 2017
in the Tournament of Roses, Rose Parade.
Our annual participation in the Rose Parade is
unquestionably the highest visibility Rotary promotion in the world.
According to the Pasadena Tournament of Roses 2016 statistics, 70
million US and international households viewed the parade on television;
and over 700,000 attended the 2016 Rose Parade. People
in 243 countries and territories viewed the parade. It is
nearly impossible to estimate how many people saw and heard something
about Rotary. What an outstanding opportunity to promote Rotary
to the world!
Although the float is not a project of Rotary
International, the success of the float is a tribute to the dedication
of the Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee. Our efforts, supported
entirely by voluntary contributions from Rotary districts, clubs
and individuals across the United States and Canada, will make this
the 38th consecutive Rotary entry in the Tournament of Roses parade.
The Rotary Rose Parade Float Committee is
proud to provide this recognition opportunity as a gift to Rotary
International, The Rotary Foundation and the 1.2 million Rotarians
who continue to “serve humanity” each and every day.
Thank you for the opportunity to serve.
K.R. "Ravi" Ravindran - Rotary International President
