1-09 Rotary's Float in Rose Bowl Parade

The 2009 Rotary Rose Bowl Parade Float

The 120th Rose Parade themed "Hats Off To Entertainment", took place on Thursday, January 1, 2009 at 8:00 a.m. (PST) and featured spirited marching bands from throughout the nation, majestic floral floats, and high-stepping equestrian units.

The Rose Parade features three types of entries: floral floats entered by a participating corporation or community organization; equestrian units; and marching bands. The only cars that appear in the Rose Parade are those that carry the Grand Marshal, the Mayor of Pasadena, and the Tournament of Roses President.

Many of the Rose Parade's participating organizations have a long history with the Tournament of Roses and have made repeated appearances in the Parade. Rotary International has entered a float in the Rose Parade every year since 1980. Floats were also entered in 1966, 1946, 1942, and 1927.

The 2009 theme of Rotary's float is "Make Dreams Real"

The 2009 theme was based on RI President D. K. Lee dream and deep desire to provide all the world's children with clean water, health care, education and happy and peaceful lives. The float design was based on Shakespeare's romantic comedy, A Midsummer Night's Dream, one of his most beloved and entertaining plays.

The float depicted a beautiful garden setting with three exquisitely decorated fairies. Seven women representing the Southern California and Nevada district of Rotary International rode on the float in celebration of the year 1009, which marked the 20th anniversary of women involved in Rotary in the United States.

Rotary’s participation in the Pasadena Tournament of Roses Parade is a wonderful way to reach out to millions of people. Television coverage amplifies our efforts by delivering a message of what Rotary stands for and what Rotarians do for mankind.

The Rose Parade was broadcast on several local, national, and international television stations - seen in more than 200 international territories.

The work of many brought an artist's rendering to life...
